More Support for Women and Under 5 Children to Tackle Morbidity and Mortality Challenges

Pregnant women and children under five years old in Nasarawa state can expect increased support to address morbidity and mortality challenges they face.

This assurance was given by the State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Gaza Gwamna, during the official flag-off ceremony for the 2024 first round of Maternal, Newborn Child Health Week held in Lafia on Monday. 

The Maternal, Newborn Child Health Week is designed to provide essential health interventions such as Vitamin A supplementation, deworming tablets, childbirth spacing counseling, and other antenatal care services to pregnant women and young children.  

These interventions aim to combat malnutrition, pregnancy-related complications, and improve health outcomes for both mothers and children. 

State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Gaza Gwamna, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Damina John Ali, emphasized the importance of caregivers utilizing these available interventions to reduce the risk of illnesses that could negatively impact children and pregnant women. 

Acknowledging the support of religious and traditional leaders in promoting better health outcomes in the state, the Executive Secretary of the Nasarawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Mohammed Usman Adis, expressed the agency’s commitment to expanding coverage and access to health services. 

Healthcare workers and development partners were also lauded for their efforts in supporting Nasarawa state’s initiatives to enhance reproductive health, maternal and child nutrition, and other health indicators.  

Representatives from Helen Keller International and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency expressed their appreciation for the state government’s commitment and highlighted the progress made in areas of maternal and child nutrition and immunizations, pledging continued support.
