Rural Farmers To Get Albizia Lebek Seedlings For Planting In Nasarawa State
Over nine hundred and thirty-eight thousand head seedlings of Albizia Lebek trees are to be distributed to rural Farmers in Nasarawa state.
Tree Lead, of a Non-Governmental Organisation, One acre Fund Nigeria, Zainab Haruna, announced this during the 2024 flag-off ceremony of the distribution of Agro Forestry Free seedlings to farmers in Nasarawa Eggon.
Albizia Lebek is a Nitrogen fixing fast growing tree with the ability to increase soil fertility for optimal crop growth and development.
Flagging off the 2024 distribution of one million seedlings of Albizia Lebek, the Tree Lead, One acre Fund Nigeria, Zainab Haruna, said the program was aimed at promoting soil health and fertility as well as combating climate change.
Zainab noted that over 34,000 farmers have been served with the seedlings with a view to improving quality yield.
According to Zainab Haruna, the program is implemented in the three local government areas of Obi, Lafia and Nasarawa Eggon with fifty one nursery beds to enable them distribute more seedlings across the state.
On the significance of the program, the Director Climate change, Nasarawa state ministry for Environment and Natural Resources Mr. Angbashim Ishaku said tree planting is very in protecting the soil and other effects of climate change.
Applauding the organizers of the program, the chairman of Nasarawa Eggon Local Government council, Danlami Idris represented by the councilor representing Ubbe electoral ward, Ovye Waki and the Emir of Lafia retired Justice Sidi Mohammed Bage represented by Sarkin Adogi Idris Ladan Omaku, pledged their support to the program, and called on the beneficiaries to make good use of the seedlings considering their values to the environment and humanity.
The event featured symbolic presentation of Albizia Lebek seedlings to the beneficiaries.
