The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a group of Japanese atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, for their tireless advocacy towards a nuclear-free world.

The Nobel Committee recognized the group, known as Hibakusha, for their grassroots movement and powerful witness testimony, highlighting the devastating consequences of nuclear warfare.

“This award acknowledges the Hibakusha’s unwavering dedication to ensuring nuclear weapons are never used again,” the committee stated.

A Legacy of Peace

The Nobel Peace Prize joins a distinguished list of past winners, including:

  • Nelson Mandela, anti-apartheid champion
  • Barack Obama, former US President, for strengthening international diplomacy
  • Malala Yousafzai, Pakistani activist, for girls’ education
  • Narges Mohammadi, Iranian women’s rights activist (2023)

The Nobel Tradition

The Nobel Prizes were established by Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel to recognize outstanding contributions to humanity. This year’s chemistry prize was awarded to Sir Demis Hassabis, John Jumper, and David Baker for breakthroughs in protein structure prediction.

The Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony will take place on December 10, marking the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
