Nasarawa State Government has taken a significant leap in enhancing healthcare services with the inauguration of a cutting-edge Mammography Centre in Lafia, the state capital. Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe launched the facility on behalf of Governor Abdullahi Sule at the Taimako Centre, situated behind the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital.

A First-of-Its-Kind Facility

The Mammography Centre is touted as the first of its kind in northern Nigeria, serving as a research and training hub for cancer-related diseases. This development underscores the state’s commitment to improving cancer treatment and care.

Key Objectives

  • Enhanced Collaboration: The state government vows to continue partnering with donors and health organizations to boost cancer treatment.
  • Budgetary Provisions: Adequate funding will be allocated for the facility’s maintenance.
  • Rural Healthcare: Primary healthcare centers will be strengthened to cater to rural communities, with more general hospitals in the pipeline.

Commissioner for Health Dr. Gaza Gwamna and Chief Medical Director Dr. Ikrama Hassan emphasized the centre’s importance in providing access to healthcare services, particularly early cancer detection and treatment.

Donation and Support

The Mammography Centre was donated by Total Energies as part of their corporate social responsibility, aiming to support the global fight against cancer and reduce Nigeria’s high mortality rate. The Emir of Lafia, Retired Justice Sidi Bage Mohammed, commended the donors for their intervention.

This milestone reflects Nasarawa State’s efforts to prioritize healthcare and well-being, aligning with the state’s vision for progress and development.
