Legislative Council Calls for Enhanced Security in Assakio, Lafia
Lafia LG Legislative Council has emphasized the need for security agencies to intensify surveillance in Assakio, Lafia, the state capital. This call was made during a plenary session at the council chamber in GRA, Lafia, following the recent murder of a political activist, Mr. Moses Asuma, from the Gbabo area in Assakio.
Councilor Alose Lazarus Okugya, representing Assakio Electoral Ward, raised a motion of public interest, highlighting the need for urgent action to address the security concerns in the area. Okugya stressed that the recent murder has compelled him to raise the motion, urging the house to alert the executive arm of the Lafia Local Government Council to take immediate action.
The motion received support from Councilor Isa Mohammed, representing Ashige Electoral Ward, who emphasized the responsibility of elected representatives to protect the lives and property of their constituents. Mohammed called on the relevant authorities to take immediate and necessary action to ensure the safety and security of the community.
Other members of the legislative council, including Majority Leader Umar Ahmadu Gambo and Councillor Isa Dadda’u, representing Makama Ward, also voiced their concerns and stressed the need for urgent measures to prevent further escalation of the situation.
In his ruling, the Speaker of the Legislative Council, Mohammed Shuaibu Madaki, expressed deep concern over the matter and directed the clerk of the house to communicate with the executive arm of the Lafia Local Government Council to ensure prompt action is taken. Madaki emphasized that the safety of the people is paramount and urged the executive arm to take immediate action.
The house subsequently adjourned its sitting to February 11, 2025, following a motion moved by Majority Leader Umar Ahmadu Gambo and seconded by Councillor Usman Shitu Adamu.
