President Tinubu Shakes Up Nigeria’s Higher Education Sector with Key Appointments

In a significant move, President Bola Tinubu has dissolved the governing council of Yakubu Gowon University (formerly UniAbuja) and relieved Professor Aisha Maikudi of her duties as Vice-Chancellor, effective immediately Âą. This decision is part of a broader effort to revitalize Nigeria’s higher education system.
To replace Maikudi, President Tinubu has appointed Professor Patricia Manko as Acting Vice Chancellor for a six-month term. However, Manko will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice Chancellor position when it becomes available.
In addition to the changes at Yakubu Gowon University, President Tinubu has made several other key appointments:
- Senator Lanre Tejuoso has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, succeeding his role as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
- Senator Joy Emordi will take over as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
- Professor Oguejiofu Ujam has been appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, replacing Professor Polycarp Chigbu.
- General Ike Nwachukwu has been reassigned as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo.
- Olubunmi Ojo has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
- Professor Zubairu Abdullahi will succeed Ojo as Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Lokoja.
- Senator Sani Stores has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.
- Olugbenga Kukoyi has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.
These appointments and reassignments are effective immediately, and President Tinubu has emphasized that they reflect his administration’s commitment to revitalizing Nigeria’s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability.
