Nasarawa Health Commissioner Advocates for Regular Blood Pressure Monitoring
The Nasarawa State Commissioner of Health Doctor Gaza Gwamna has called for regular monitoring of blood pressure for healthy living.
Commissioner of Health, made the call during a press briefing to commemorate this year’s World Hypertension Day, held at the Ministry’s conference hall in Lafia.
World Hypertension League in 2005 designated seventeenth May annually, as World Hypertension Day, which seeks to raise awareness about hypertension and promote the prevention, detection, and control of this condition.
This year’s theme’ “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer” is a global call to take proactive steps in stemming the impact of Hypertension and improving the overall wellbeing.
Briefing journalists, the state commissioner of Health Doctor Gaza Gwamna who was represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr John Damina, noted that Hypertension is a deadly condition and emphasized regular monitoring of blood pressure in order to maintain healthy BP levels.
“Early detection of high blood pressure allows for timely intervention and reduces the risks of heart disease, stroke and other related conditions.”
Dr Gaza further outlined, stroke, heart attack, kidney disease, obesity among others as major risks factors of the health condition, also encouraged individuals to adopt healthy lifestyle.
Buttressing on the matter to risks of developing hypertension he said by taking “balanced diet, regular exercise and stress management, individuals can lower their risks of developing hypertension”.
As part of activities to commemorate the day, the Ministry organized an awareness rally to sensitize the public on the detrimental effects of high blood pressure just as free screenings were carried out on civil servants and members of the public at Lafia modern Market.
