Nasarawa State Government Acts to Resolve Long-Standing Boundary Disputes Between Wuse and Akiri Chiefdoms
The Nasarawa State Government has initiated urgent measures to address the long-standing boundary disputes between the Wuse and Akiri Chiefdoms in Awe Local Government Area. This development emerged during a stakeholders meeting organized by the state Boundary Commission, held at the office of the Executive Chairman of Awe Local Government Council on Thursday.
The meeting was convened in line with a directive from Governor Abdullahi Sule, aimed at finding a lasting solution to the conflict. Recently, tensions escalated within the Wuse and Akiri communities, resulting in tragic losses of lives and property due to the protracted boundary disagreement.
To restore peace in the region, Governor Sule has instructed the state Boundary Commission and the office of the State Surveyor General to ensure proper demarcation between the two Chiefdoms. Abdullahi Adokwe Ladan, the Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Boundary Commission, affirmed the administration’s dedication to fostering peaceful coexistence. He noted that the Akiri-Wuse boundary issue had not received significant attention until now, highlighting the state’s commitment under the governor’s leadership.
Surveyor Makama Ishaya, the State Surveyor General, emphasized that the initiative aims to promote unity between the Wuse and Akiri communities. He called on local traditional leaders and residents to support the state government’s efforts in achieving this goal.
The Emirs of Awe and Azara, Isa Abubakar Umar and Kabiru Musa Ibrahim, along with Wuse Chief Jibrin Bala Yakubu and Akiri Chief Suleiman Umar Yanfa, expressed their appreciation for the measures taken by the governor and the Boundary Commission. They are optimistic that these steps will restore lasting peace and harmony in their communities and pledged their cooperation.
As a part of the resolution process, a Joint Field Team was formed to assess the disputed areas and propose a provisional boundary line. This plan aims to pave the way for a permanent resolution and proper demarcation of the boundaries in question, which received support from the Executive Chairman of Awe Local Government Council, Abubakar Dan-Akano.
