In a symbolic move, members of the Syrian diaspora have installed the flag of Syrian rebel groups at the Syrian embassy in Moscow. This gesture holds significant weight, given Russia’s long-standing support for the Assad regime throughout Syria’s 13-year civil war.

The development comes on the heels of the Kremlin’s confirmation that President Putin has granted asylum to deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family in Russia. According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Putin personally made the decision, although he declined to disclose Assad’s current whereabouts or confirm any future meetings between Putin and Assad.

Peskov emphasized Russia’s willingness to maintain contacts with whoever assumes power in Syria. This statement suggests a potential shift in Russia’s stance on the Syrian conflict, as the country navigates its complex relationships with various factions involved.
