The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, in collaboration with the Nasarawa State Government, is set to enroll over 5,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Kadarko and Giza IDP Camps in mass literacy education and skill acquisition programs. This initiative aims to provide education and promote social integration and reintegration into formal education for the IDPs.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Shuaibu Shehu Aliyu, disclosed this during a two-day sensitization and enrollment campaign held at the IDP Camps in Kadarko and Giza. The IDPs were forced to flee their homes in some communities in Nasarawa State bordering Benue State after an attack on Yalwata and Daudu Communities in Benue State.

The sensitization and enrollment campaign is part of the Commission’s efforts to provide education to IDPs and promote social integration and reintegration into formal education. Dr. Aliyu, represented by Tolu Joseph Oni, disclosed that arrangements have been concluded to enroll the IDPs in mass literacy education and skill acquisition programs in various trades.

The Director of Adult and Non-Formal Education in the state Ministry of Education, Mohammed Audu, expressed the state government’s readiness to partner with the Commission to ensure the success of the program. He revealed plans by the state government to open literacy education centers across the state to provide education and skills acquisition opportunities for those who lack access to basic and formal education.

The Chairman of Tiv Development Association (TIDA) Giza Administrative Area Council branch, Jeremiah Farafase, appreciated the Commission’s efforts and appealed to the state government to facilitate the IDPs’ return to their homes and provide relief materials. This initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of the IDPs, providing them with the opportunity to acquire literacy skills and vocational training, and ultimately, reintegrate into their communities.
