Nasarawa State Flood Relief: 30 Riverine Communities to Benefit from N-HYPPADEC Intervention

Thirty riverine communities across seven Local Government Areas in Nasarawa State will soon receive relief from the hardships caused by recurrent flooding, thanks to intervention projects by the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC).

The affected communities, located in Awe, Doma, Nasarawa, Keffi, Kokona, Karu, and Toto Local Government Areas, have faced numerous challenges due to the overflow of the River Benue and the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

To ensure effective assistance, N-HYPPADEC has organized a two-day training session for enumerators in Lafia, the state capital. The enumerators will conduct thorough needs assessments and identify flood-prone communities that require aid.

According to Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, the commission’s primary goal is to alleviate the suffering of these communities.

The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Yakubu Kwanta, emphasized the importance of the intervention, stating that it will bring relief to communities that have endured significant loss of life and property due to annual flooding incidents.

A traditional ruler in Nasarawa State, Aren Koron Kuje Mr. Sunday Namo, expressed gratitude to N-HYPPADEC for its intervention and noted that local communities have been sensitized to ensure a seamless mapping and enumeration process.
