The Nasarawa State Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation is taking proactive measures to enhance the teaching and learning of science and technology among educators in the state.

This was highlighted during a three-day workshop organized for science teachers across the state’s three senatorial districts.

The workshop was held at key institutions which include Government Science School Lafia, Government College Keffi, and Government Science School Wamba with the primary goal of reminding science educators of their crucial role in guiding students as they navigate their future career paths.

Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Kafu Emgba, emphasized the need for teachers to adapt to the rapidly evolving fields of science and technology urging teachers to play a pivotal role in inspiring younger generations, asserting that Nigeria must engage with global advancements in science and technology.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Atinuke Chammang, encouraged science teachers to refine their teaching methodologies saying certain negative attitudes among educators have contributed to students’ struggles to pursue their ambitions in the sciences.

Resource persons Iliyasu Abdulaziz and Mrs. Solomon Bitrus underscored the importance of enhancing the skills of science and technology teachers.

The Director overseeing the refresher course, Dr. Enoch Kpanja, explained that the Ministry is dedicated to reigniting students’ passion for science, particularly in light of the recent decline in interest and expressed confidence that the outcomes of the workshop would reflect positively on students’ engagement with science and technology.

Some participants interviewed described the workshop as timely and necessary given the diminishing understanding of science and technology among students attributing the challenges to administrative lapses, teachers’ attitudes toward students, and a lack of modern knowledge and skills among educators.
