Nasarawa State Urged to Invest in Landscape for Enhanced Food Sufficiency
Experts in the agricultural sector are calling on the Nasarawa state government to prioritize investments in landscape management to boost food production and security. This appeal was made during the public presentation of the inclusive Landscape Management plan for Doma Rutu Socio-economic landscape, a project aimed at transforming the agricultural food system in West and Central Africa.
Key Objectives of the Project
- Promote Dry Season Farming: Enhance agricultural production during dry seasons
- Tree Planting: Encourage afforestation and sustainable land use
- Irrigation Farming: Harness water resources for efficient farming practices
Professor Henry Igbadun from ABU Zaria emphasized Nasarawa state’s abundant water resources and the need for investment in landscape management for agricultural transformation. Dr. Adebayo Oke from the International Water Management Institute Accra Ghana highlighted the project’s goal to enhance farmers’ capacities in utilizing water resources for irrigation farming.
Government and Stakeholder Support
Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, and Natural Resources, and the Ministry of Water Resources expressed appreciation for the development partnership and assured that the state government will support the plans to transform and promote agricultural activities.
Community Leaders’ Appeal
Non-governmental organizations and community leaders urged the state government to prioritize security and empowerment of farmers to enhance food sufficiency. By investing in landscape management and supporting farmers, Nasarawa state can make significant strides in achieving food security and sustainable agricultural development.
