Thorough medical research is the real game-changer for improving healthcare in our hospitals, says Dr. Ikrama Hassan, Chief Medical Director of Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH), Lafia.

Dr. Hassan made the point during the maiden Scientific Conference held at the hospital’s conference hall in Lafia. Themed “Advancing Healthcare Through Evidence-based Research and Innovation: From Local Evidence to Global Standards,” the conference was put together by FUTH Lafia in partnership with pharmaceutical companies. The goal: bring researchers up to speed on modern trends that can directly improve patient care.

Declaring the event open, Dr. Hassan called it a major milestone in the hospital’s drive for research, innovation, and excellence. He explained that gatherings like this give doctors, researchers, and health stakeholders a chance to swap ideas, share field experience, and keep up with emerging trends. “Scientific conferences are critical,” he said. “They push medical knowledge forward and that translates to better care for patients.”

The CMD reaffirmed FUTH’s commitment to quality, accessible healthcare. But he stressed that it won’t happen without continuous learning, research, and teamwork among health professionals. He encouraged participants to dive into the discussions and use the platform to shape real solutions for the health sector.

Guest speaker Professor Mustapha Umar Liman from the Federal University of Lafia tied the theme directly to impact. He challenged researchers to double down on studies that lead to new pharmaceutical products, calling that kind of research crucial for the country’s health system.

Also speaking, the Emir of Azara, Dr. Bello Surajudeen, who chaired the local organizing committee, praised FUTH management for taking bold steps to equip researchers with relevant knowledge. He said the conference creates a valuable space for exchanging ideas, innovation, and best practices in healthcare delivery.

Some participants who spoke after the sessions thanked FUTH management for the opportunity, saying the knowledge shared would help them improve service delivery in their own facilities.

The maiden conference signals FUTH Lafia’s intent to move from routine care to a research-driven hospital — one where local findings can meet global standards and ultimately give patients better outcomes.
