Stakeholders Seek Improved Facilities And Teachers In Nasarawa West Schools
As public primary schools reopen for a new academic session across Nasarawa State, attention is once again focused on the condition of learning facilities, the availability of teachers and the quality of education being offered to pupils.
In the Western Senatorial Zone, covering Keffi, Kokona, Karu, Nasarawa and Toto Local Government Areas, some schools, particularly those in rural communities, continue to face infrastructure and manpower challenges, raising concerns about their possible impact on learning outcomes.
A visit to some public primary schools across the zone presents a mixed picture.
Some respondents in the zone, including the Principal of Government Junior Secondary School, Keffi, Rilyanu Doraya, noted that while some schools have benefited from renovations, new classrooms and other interventions, others, particularly those in rural areas, still operate in ageing structures with inadequate classrooms, furniture, water facilities and toilet amenities.
Beyond infrastructure and manpower, the ultimate measure of the education system remains learning outcomes.
Parents and teachers, including Steve Shammah and Muhammed Usman, say pupils need not only access to school, but also quality teaching, adequate learning materials and a conducive environment to develop strong literacy and numeracy skills.
As the new academic session begins, stakeholders are therefore calling for sustained investment in primary education, regular monitoring of schools and the equitable deployment of teachers across the zone.
“Government is committed to improving the standard of education through infrastructure development, provision of teaching materials and strengthening the capacity of teachers.”
With public schools set to resume, stakeholders say addressing existing gaps in infrastructure and teacher availability will be critical to improving learning outcomes and providing pupils across Nasarawa West with a stronger foundation for the future.
