Nasarawa Moves to Stop Child Exploitation at Mining Sites

The Nasarawa State Government has expressed concern over the exploitation of minors at mining sites, saying measures have been put in place to sanitise mining operations and protect the rights of children in line with environmental laws.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mineral Resources and Mining, Dr. Margaret Elayo, stated this during a press briefing in her office.
Briefing journalists on the activities of the ministry over the past few months, Dr. Elayo said the ministry had arrested some illegal miners operating at various mining sites across the state.
According to the Commissioner, the ministry had also received reports indicating that some mining sites in Wamba, Nasarawa Eggon and Kokona Local Government Areas were exposing children to health hazards and denying them access to education.
She expressed disapproval of the situation, stressing that drastic measures would be taken against companies or individuals found engaging in practices that endanger children or violate the relevant laws governing mining operations in the state.
The Commissioner also advised parents to discourage their children from engaging in activities at mining sites, warning companies operating without the necessary licences that the ministry would take decisive action against them.
Dr. Elayo said the state government would collaborate with security agencies, traditional rulers and other community leaders to ensure compliance with established guidelines governing mining activities across the state.
She urged members of the public to report cases of illegal mining activities and the use of underage children at mining sites to the appropriate authorities.
The Commissioner also appreciated the support and cooperation of the press in reporting the activities of the ministry and raising public awareness about issues affecting the environment and mining sector in Nasarawa State.
