Political players in Lafia have been warned to tone down the heat and avoid inflammatory politics as the 2027 general elections draw closer.

The caution came from Alh. Ibrahim Mohammed Hamza, Permanent Member I of the Nasarawa State Internal Revenue Service, during an exclusive interview with NBS News. His comments followed a clash between rival political groups in Lafia on Monday that left people injured and property destroyed.

Reacting to the incident, Hamza — who also holds the traditional title of Karfen Dawakin Lafia — appealed to residents to embrace civil, issue-based politics. “We must avoid negative tendencies before, during, and after elections,” he said. He called on parents and community elders to talk to their children and wards, urging them to reject politics of blackmail, disrespect, and destruction.

Hamza pointed to a recent example to make his case: “When one group was burning brooms, the symbol of the APC, nobody attacked them. People should be allowed to market their candidates peacefully.”

Turning to the Nasarawa North Senatorial District bye-election set for this weekend, he urged voters to back APC candidate Danladi Halilu Emvuluanza. Hamza described Emvuluanza as credible and someone with a track record of contributing to community development. A vote for him, he argued, would also be a vote of thanks to Governor Abdullahi Sule for his work in the zone and across Nasarawa State. He added that Emvuluanza is positioned to continue the governor’s development agenda.

On the APC primaries that just wrapped up, Hamza appealed for unity. He asked party members to rally behind those who emerged as candidates, stressing that the APC is “one entity where everyone is a winner” regardless of primary outcomes.

“That is the character of every election. Those who lose today could be winners tomorrow,” he said. “The primaries were free, fair and transparent and should be accepted by all party members.”

He expressed confidence that the APC has internal mechanisms to resolve any disputes, and believes tensions will be settled well before the general elections.

Hamza’s message was clear: Lafia, and Nasarawa as a whole, can only develop in an atmosphere of peace. Politics should be a contest of ideas, not a source of violence.
