Media Practitioners Challenged to Champion Menstrual Health and Hygiene in Nasarawa State

Media practitioners in Nasarawa State have been urged to take a leading role in promoting Menstrual Health and Hygiene among women and girls in the society. This call was made during a two-day State Level Menstrual Health Training for Media Practitioners held at Kini Country Home, Akwanga.
The training, organized by Population Services International (PSI) Nigeria, brought together journalists, radio presenters, and social media content creators to equip them with comprehensive knowledge, skills, and resources on Menstrual Health and Hygiene. The aim was to enable them to effectively educate and support adolescent girls and young women.
The Nasarawa State Support Officer for Population Services International, Mope Folaronsho, noted that the training is part of the organization’s efforts to train journalists to be champions in Menstrual Health Hygiene. She emphasized that the training would increase participants’ knowledge on menstrual health and hygiene, enabling them to educate and sensitize young girls and women about their menstrual hygiene.
Mope charged the participants to intensify efforts in putting into practice the knowledge gained during the training, and reiterated PSI Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening synergy with relevant stakeholders in the communities to educate and enlighten the public about Menstrual Health and Hygiene.
The facilitator and representative of the Nasarawa State Primary Health Care Services, Mrs. Magdalene Dominic, noted that the training aligns with the state government’s determination to provide quality healthcare services and protect the rights of women and young girls, particularly concerning their menstrual health and hygiene. She challenged participants to use their media platforms to educate the public about misconceptions surrounding menstruation and to uphold their roles without compromise.
Participants who were interviewed expressed appreciation to Population Services International (PSI) Nigeria for the knowledge imparted and promised to utilize the knowledge gained for the betterment of women and young girls.
The two-day training featured practical demonstrations on the usage of menstrual pads, among other practical aspects of menstruation. By equipping media practitioners with the necessary knowledge and skills, the training aimed to promote Menstrual Health and Hygiene in Nasarawa State and improve the lives of women and girls.
