Fulani Community Tackles Drug Abuse Among Youths in Nasarawa West
The Fulani community in Nasarawa West Senatorial zone has taken proactive steps to curb drug abuse among its youths. This decision was reached during a meeting convened by Ibrahim Abdullahi, Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Livestock and Nomadic Affairs, at the palace of Sarkin Sabon Gida in Kokona Local Government Area.
Factors Contributing to Drug Abuse
Fulani leaders identified illiteracy as a significant contributor to drug abuse among youths, emphasizing the need for parents to prioritize education. Research supports this claim, showing a strong correlation between education and reduced substance abuse.
Strategic Measures
To address the issue, the Fulani community proposes:
- Youth Empowerment: Providing opportunities for economic growth and development.
- Counselling Services: Access to professional guidance and support.
- Public Sensitization: Raising awareness about drug abuse consequences.
- Regular Police Patrols: Enhancing security and monitoring.
- Increased Cost of Abused Substances: Discouraging accessibility.
By adopting a community-based approach, the Fulani community aims to mitigate drug abuse’s devastating socio-economic impacts on youths and society.
