US Envoy Calls for Sudan-Wide Arms Embargo
From the foreign scene, the United States President Donald Trump’s senior Africa envoy has called on the United Nations to extend its arms embargo beyond Darfur to cover the whole of Sudan.
The envoy, Massad Boulos, warned that the ongoing conflict could spread further across the region if external financial and military support to the warring parties is not addressed.
He urged the United Nations Security Council to take action to prevent the supply of weapons, drones and related technologies to the parties involved in the conflict.
Drone attacks have continued to intensify, with both the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, RSF, accused of using drones in the fighting.
The conflict, now in its fourth year, has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people and forced about 14 million others to flee their homes.
The Sudanese army currently controls large parts of the central and eastern regions of the country, while the RSF maintains its stronghold in the western Darfur region and parts of the south.
