IPAC Calls for Stronger Political Cooperation in Nasarawa
The Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, Nasarawa State, has called for stronger cooperation among political parties to promote peaceful elections, political tolerance and democratic development in the state.
Chairman of IPAC, Nasarawa State, Danlami Muhammed Musa, made the call at the grand unveiling and five hundred million naira fundraising ceremony for the construction of the IPAC State Secretariat, held in Lafia.
In his welcoming address, Danlami Muhammed Musa said the organisation had continued to play an important role in mobilising political parties towards deepening democracy in Nigeria through the promotion of peaceful inter-party relations and credible elections.
Speaking on the secretariat project, Musa expressed optimism that its completion would strengthen the activities of IPAC and provide an appropriate platform for political parties to engage constructively on issues concerning democracy and governance.
He appealed to stakeholders, political parties, government officials, business leaders and members of the public to support the five hundred million naira fundraising initiative.
He described the project as an investment in democratic development in Nasarawa State and urged political parties to accept electoral outcomes in the spirit of the rules of the game.
Musa stressed that cooperation among political parties remained critical to the survival and development of democracy.
Presenting a paper titled “Strengthening Democracy: Building a Befitting Secretariat for Political Parties in Nasarawa State,” Professor George Genyi of the Department of Political Science, Federal University of Lafia, FULAFIA, emphasised the importance of strong political institutions and effective inter-party engagement in consolidating democratic governance.
Professor Genyi noted that political parties play a central role in democratic development and stressed the need for an environment that encourages constructive political engagement, tolerance and respect for democratic rules.
The State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Augustine Akwe, called on political leaders to refrain from making unguarded utterances and instead become ambassadors of peace, tolerance and responsible citizenship.
Akwe urged IPAC to serve as a platform where political parties can come together, discuss issues affecting the democratic process, resolve disagreements through dialogue and promote peaceful political participation.
The representative of the State Commissioner of Police and other speakers at the event also stressed the need for decorum in politicking.
They assured that the Nasarawa State Police Command would continue to take necessary measures to protect lives and property and ensure a peaceful political environment across the state.
