Nasarawa Govt Reaffirms Commitment to Resolving University Strike
The Nasarawa State Government says it will not renege on the promise made to striking lecturers of the state-owned university and is committed to ensuring the resumption and continuation of academic activities at the institution.
The Secretary to the Government of Nasarawa State, Labaran Magaji Shuaibu, SAN, stated this when he received the President of the Students’ Representative Council, NANS, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, at his office in Lafia.
Labaran Magaji Shuaibu commended the students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, for choosing dialogue over protests amid the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
He said the state government remained committed to resolving the lingering issues responsible for the strike, despite the delay experienced in fulfilling some of its obligations.
The SSG advised the Students’ Representative Council of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, to continue to embrace dialogue instead of protests.
He assured the students that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Abdullahi Sule, would honour its financial commitments to the institution and work towards creating the necessary conditions for academic activities to resume.
Speaking on the reason behind the delay, the SSG explained that government operates within established due-process requirements and strict administrative procedures.
He appealed to students and lecturers of the institution to remain patient and understanding as government works through the processes required to resolve the outstanding issues.
Labaran Magaji Shuaibu also urged the student leaders to see their current leadership responsibilities as a stepping stone towards future leadership roles.
He encouraged them to communicate the outcome of their discussion with the SSG to the university’s ASUU leadership to help facilitate efforts towards reopening the institution.
Earlier, the President of the Students’ Representative Council, NSUK Chapter, Comrade Gideon Amos, informed the SSG that ASUU embarked on the strike over outstanding payments which the government was yet to complete.
He expressed appreciation to the SSG for granting them an audience, describing the gesture as an indication that the state government places importance on education and the welfare of students in Nasarawa State.
