Sule Reaffirms Commitment To Effective Governance
The Nasarawa State Government has renewed its commitment to providing purposeful leadership at all tiers of government through well-equipped manpower development that will propel the socio-economic growth of the state.
Governor Abdullahi Sule reiterated this at a three-day retreat for members of the State Executive Council at De Bridge Ville Hotel and Suites, Jos, Plateau State.
The Executive Governance and Fiscal Management Retreat, organised by the Nasarawa State Government in collaboration with Next Grade Consulting Limited, with the theme, “Strengthening Governance through Collaborative Leadership, Fiscal Responsibility and Sustainable Local Government Administration,” brought together members of the State Executive Council, chairmen and administrators of Area Administrative Councils, as well as some heads of boards and agencies.
Governor Abdullahi Sule, represented by the State Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, explained that the decision to accord priority to the local government system is hinged on the need to enhance administration at the third tier of government in order to make it more efficient in delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.
He noted that it is incumbent on the government to ensure good governance and instil in political and public office holders the culture of transparency, accountability, prudent management of resources, and proper execution of programmes and decisions.
The Governor added that the retreat seeks to expose participants to the rudiments of local government administration in line with the enabling laws and prepare them better to face the herculean task of grassroots management.
The Managing Director of Next Grade Consulting Limited, Hussaini Ibrahim Abubakar, commended the foresight of the state government in organising the retreat, stating that it offers participants the opportunity to pause, reflect and collectively examine how they can strengthen economic governance in the state.
The Speaker of the State Assembly, represented by the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Musa Abubakar, asserted that the legislative arm would continue to pass laws that are favourable to local council administration.
For the Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Aminu Mu’azu Maifata, and the State ALGON Chairman, Safiyanu Isa Andaha, there could not have been a better time to hold the retreat, which, according to them, would go a long way in improving synergy between the executive and the legislature in the local governments and leave participants better informed about the nitty-gritty of governance at the grassroots.
The retreat featured technical sessions, where presentations on selected topics covering critical areas of governance and the economy were discussed.
