Nasarawa State Government is gearing up to combat potential flooding, particularly in Lafia, the state capital, during this year’s rainy season.

The Managing Director of Nasarawa State Urban Development Board (NUDB), Engr. Muhammad Yahaya Wada, disclosed this during his visit to flood-prone areas in the city on Tuesday, 22/05/2024.

The Managing Director of Nasarawa State Urban Development Board Engr. Muhammad Yahaya Wada said the proactive measure was prompted by a recent report from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) forecasting heavy rainfall during the upcoming rainy season, which could lead to widespread flooding.

He affirmed that following the assessment, a comprehensive report would be presented to Governor Abdullahi Sule for decisive action to safeguard residents from potential hazards.Wada who frowned at the attitude of some residents who have encroached on setback spaces or dispose waste in waterways, warned that such behavior would no longer be tolerated.

“We also noticed some people are dumping refuse in irregular places that causes blockage of water lines and it may aggravate the flooding”

During its inspection of areas behind the presidential lodge on Shendam Road, adjacent to Asakyo Garage, and in the B-Division neighborhood in Lafia, the NUDB enforcement team identified and marked illegal structures and boundaries and pledged to pursue legal measures against violators.

Other locations evaluated by the Managing Director and his team included Jos Road, areas behind the government house, the GRA-Bukar Ari link road, Bukan Ari Road, and Kasuwan Timatir Road in Lafia.
